Krishna is worshipped as the beloved — teacher of the Gita and the child of Gokul. This puja is offered on Janmashtami at midnight, on Ekadashi, and by households who keep a laddu-gopal at home and care for him daily.

Pre-Puja Preparation

Janmashtami worship is a night vigil — prepare early, rest before midnight.

Keep the vratFast through the day; the fast is broken after the midnight puja.
Bathe and wear yellow or peacock-blue clothing
Set up the jhula (cradle)Decorate the swing with flowers, peacock feathers and small bells.
Sanctify the spaceClean the area, sprinkle Ganga jal and draw a small rangoli.

Jhula, Idol & Seating

The laddu-gopal is treated as a child of the house, not a statue.

Chowki or jhula placed facing East
Fresh yellow silk cloth for the chowki and the cradle
Bal Gopal idol with tiny clothes, mukut, flute and jewellery

Decoration

Peacock feathers and a tulsi plant near the altar
Small bells, ghungroo and a flower garland for the jhula

Clean asan facing the jhula
Bhagavad Gita or Bhagavatam kept on a stand
