Shiva is worshipped as the stillness behind all change — Bholenath, who asks for almost nothing. This puja centres on the abhishek of the Shivling and is offered on Mondays, on Pradosh, and through the night of Mahashivratri.

Pre-Puja Preparation

Shiva worship is simple by nature — water, bilva leaves and sincerity.

Bathe and wear clean white clothing
Sanctify the spaceClean the area and sprinkle Ganga jal around the Shivling.
Arrange drainage for the abhishekPlace the Shivling on a jaladhari or thali so the offering water flows away cleanly.
Choose the timePradosh Kaal (after sunset), or the four praharas through Mahashivratri night.

Face North or East, with the jaladhari pointing North.

Deity Platform

Low chowki or stone base for the Shivling
Jaladhari or wide brass thali to collect the abhishek water
Nandi placed facing the Shivling, with a trishul and damru if available

Abhishek Vessels

Copper or brass lota for the water abhishek
Separate small pots for milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar

Devotee Seating

Woolen or kusha asan facing North or East
Rudraksha mala kept for the jaap
